Puppy Temperament Testing at 7 Weeks: How Breeders Run and Use It
Updated September 6, 2026 · 7 min read · By the BreedBloom team
A temperament evaluation will not tell you what a puppy will be at three years old. It will tell you, on one day, how each puppy responds to novelty, restraint, sound and a stranger, and that is enough to place puppies far better than colour and pick order do.
Why day 49
Around seven weeks puppies are neurologically mature enough to respond individually, before littermate hierarchy and the first fear period distort results. Most established tests are timed for this window.
Common tests
•
Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test (PAT): ten exercises scored 1–6 covering social attraction, following, restraint, social and elevation dominance, retrieving, touch, sound and sight sensitivity, and stability.
•
Avidog APET: a broader assessment including structure and drive, popular in sporting and working programs.
•
Breed-club or working-organisation evaluations for service, detection or herding aptitude.
Setting it up fairly
•
Unfamiliar but quiet room, unfamiliar tester, one puppy at a time.
•
Puppies rested, not just fed, not just woken.
•
Same order and same tester for every puppy; second person records.
•
Video everything; families love it and it settles arguments about scores.
•
Do not test a puppy that is sick, sore or just vaccinated.
Reading the results
Confident, quick recovery, moderate drive
Most active family homes; sport prospects
Soft, sound-sensitive, slow recovery
Quiet adult home, experienced and patient
High retrieve and following, low restraint struggle
Working, service or performance homes
Independent, low social attraction
Experienced owner with a job for the dog
Struggles hard with restraint, mouthy
Confident, structured home; not a first dog
Use the test as one input
Scores describe a day, not a destiny. Combine them with what you have seen over seven weeks and with the family's application. Your daily observations outweigh a single test when they disagree.
Communicating with families
Share the video and a plain-language summary rather than raw numbers. Explain why the puppy you are assigning fits their household. Families who understand the reasoning rarely argue with it; families who were promised "the calm one" by pick order often do.
BreedBloom stores the evaluation on each puppy, alongside weights, health and socialisation exposures, and the assignment carries through to the contract and go-home packet.
Frequently asked questions
What age do you temperament test puppies?
Around 49 days (seven weeks), before the first fear period and after the puppies can respond individually.
What is the Volhard test?
The Puppy Aptitude Test: ten short exercises scored 1–6 that assess social attraction, following, restraint, dominance, retrieving, touch, sound and sight sensitivity, and stability.
Do temperament tests predict adult behaviour?
Only loosely. They are useful for matching puppies to families on the day, especially combined with the breeder's observations over seven weeks; they are not a guarantee of adult temperament.
