What Goes in a Puppy Go-Home Packet

Updated September 6, 2026 · 6 min read · By the BreedBloom team
The go-home packet is the last thing you hand a family and the first thing they open when something goes wrong at 11 pm. A good one answers the questions before they are asked and protects both sides if the relationship ever gets difficult.

Legal and identity

    •
Signed purchase contract with the health guarantee, spay/neuter terms and return-to-breeder clause.
    •
Registration application or transfer paperwork, with limited or full registration stated.
    •
Microchip number, registry, and the transfer instructions so the chip ends up in the family's name.
    •
Bill of sale or receipt for the total paid, including the deposit.

Health records

    •
Vaccination record with product names, lot numbers and dates, plus the next due dates.
    •
Deworming history and the protocol used.
    •
Vet exam notes from the pre-placement check.
    •
Parent health testing results (OFA numbers, DNA panels) as copies or links.
    •
Any known issues disclosed in writing, even minor ones.

Care instructions

    •
Exact food, amount, meal times and how to transition if they change brands.
    •
Crate and house-training routine the puppy is already used to.
    •
Sleep schedule and where the puppy has been sleeping.
    •
What the puppy has been exposed to: surfaces, sounds, car rides, children, other animals.
    •
Grooming needs and the tools you use.

Training progress

If the puppy has started a curriculum, hand over the record: what was introduced, what is solid, what is in progress. Families who can see the curriculum keep going with it, which is good for the dog and good for your reputation.

Practical extras

    •
A scent cloth that has been in the whelping box.
    •
A few days of the current food.
    •
Vet visit schedule for the next 3 months.
    •
Your contact details and expected response times.
    •
Emergency signs that need a vet the same day (vomiting plus lethargy, no urination, bloated abdomen, etc.).
Digital and paper
Give the same packet in digital form. Paper gets lost; a link the family can open on their phone at the emergency vet does not. BreedBloom's go-home packets are built from your templates per puppy and shared to the family's BloomPetz portal with the health record and training curriculum already attached.

Frequently asked questions

What paperwork should come with a puppy?

At minimum: the signed contract, registration paperwork, microchip details, vaccination and deworming records, and a vet exam record. Add parent health-test results and written care instructions.

Should I include the parents' health test results?

Yes. Copies or verifiable links to hip, elbow, eye, cardiac and DNA results are what separate a health-tested program from a claim of one.
