Golden Retriever Breeding Guide: Litter Size, Whelping, Puppy Weights and Health Testing

Updated September 6, 2026 · 6 min read · By the BreedBloom team
Golden Retrievers are a large sporting breed with generous litters and a reputation for easy whelping, but the breed's health-testing expectations are among the most detailed of any breed. A responsible Golden program is defined as much by its OFA and cardiology paperwork as by its puppies.
Golden Retriever at a glance
Typical litter size
6–10 puppies (average around 8)
Birth weight
14–16 oz (400–450 g)
Adult weight
55–75 lb (25–34 kg)
Gestation
About 63 days from ovulation (57–72 from breeding)
Whelping
Usually free-whelping; large litters make a puppy count by radiograph important so you know when she is finished.

Breeding and whelping notes

Litters of 8–12 are not unusual. Weigh twice daily for the first three days; the smallest pups in a big litter are the ones most likely to be crowded off the best teats.
Golden puppies typically double birth weight in about 7–9 days and go home at 8 weeks at roughly 10–14 lb depending on the line.
Cancer (hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma) and subvalvular aortic stenosis are the breed's well-documented concerns; the cardiology exam matters.
Coat and colour are not health matters, but "English cream" marketing claims should not be confused with a separate breed; there is one Golden Retriever standard per registry.

Health testing before breeding

    •
Hips: OFA or PennHIP (24 months+)
    •
    Elbows: OFA
    •
Eyes: annual CAER exam by a veterinary ophthalmologist
    •
Heart: cardiac exam by a board-certified cardiologist (echocardiogram preferred)
    •
DNA: PRA1, PRA2, prcd-PRA, ichthyosis (ICH1), NCL, DM, MD (muscular dystrophy) as recommended by the GRCA
Keep the paperwork attached
Test results are only useful when they travel with the dog. Keep certificate numbers and dates on each dog's record and include copies in every go-home packet.

Tracking a Golden Retriever litter

Enter the ovulation or tie date and BreedBloom builds the Golden Retriever litter timeline: ultrasound window, X-ray count reminder, temperature checks, the day 3–16 ENS/ESI schedule, deworming and vaccination tasks, and per-puppy weight curves you can compare against the whole litter. Families follow along in the BloomPetz portal, and the go-home packet is assembled from the same records.
About these figures
Figures on this page are typical ranges drawn from breed club and veterinary references; individual lines vary. Confirm health-testing requirements with your breed's parent club, and whelping plans with your reproductive veterinarian.
